Sanjay Dutt announces ‘Khalnayak Returns’, reimagining 1993 cult classic
MUMBAI: Actor Sanjay Dutt has announced his new film Khalnayak Returns, which will offer a fresh interpretation of the 1993 cult classic.
Dutt’s Three Dimension Motion Pictures and producer Aksha Kamboj’s Aspect Entertainment have jointly acquired the rights from filmmaker Subhash Ghai and his banner Mukta Arts for the sequel to the iconic action-crime film, which also starred Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit. The makers unveiled a brief teaser of Khalnayak Returns at a special event on Friday evening, with Dutt reprising his iconic role of Ballu in a rugged new avatar.
The 66-year-old actor thanked Ghai for allowing the project to move forward.
“The journey of Khalnayak has been long, and without Subhash ji it would not have been possible. He is a legend and a man of entertainment. He will be part of this Khalnayak,” Dutt told reporters.Dutt revealed that he began developing the idea for a sequel while serving his prison sentence in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.
“In prison, I asked people around me who would be interested in watching it, and the 4,000 inmates said they would. I asked them all to write one page on it, and it took me a while to read all 4,000 pages,”Dutt, known for films such as Vaastav, Agneepath, Sadak, Mission Kashmir and the Munna Bhai franchise, said he is focused on the script rather than pressure or expectations.
“For me, what is important is the script. Whether it takes six months, eight months or more, I will keep working with Subhash ji until we get it right. The hero of the film is the script,” he added. The original Khalnayak, directed and produced by Ghai, remains one of the biggest hits of the 1990s and has since attained cult status. It featured Dutt as the anti-hero Ballu, Jackie Shroff as police officer Ram, and Madhuri Dixit as undercover officer Ganga.
The newly acquired rights pave the way for a fresh interpretation of the cult classic. While it is not yet confirmed whether it will be a remake, sequel or entirely new story, the makers say it will blend nostalgia with a contemporary approach
Ghai said he is delighted that the actor is reviving Khalnayak.
